Academic Programmes
Master of Science/Postgraduate Diploma in Geomatics
Programme Aims & Learning Outcomes
Designed for professionals in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), surveying or related fields, this programme equips students with the theoretical understanding and practical skills that are required to specialise in GIS or land and engineering surveying.
Programme Characteristics
Our multidisciplinary programme for experienced professionals advances students' knowledge in their chosen specialist areas and expands their general perspectives of geomatics.
Programme Structure
Students can select from a wide range of subjects that are offered under the Postgraduate Scheme in Construction and Land Use, each generally requiring one evening class per week over a 14-week semester.
For the MSc
Students must complete 7 subjects, including at least 4 Core Subjects, and a Dissertation that is pertinent to Geographic Information Systems (GIS) or Surveying. The Dissertation is optional. Alternatively, students can choose a Geomatics Project and one more Core Subject, in either GIS or Surveying, depending on their stream.
For the PgD
Students must complete 7 subjects, including at least 4 Core Subjects.
Core Areas of Study
The following is a brief summary of the core areas of study. Students will be provided with detailed information on the subjects for selection upon registration.
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Specialism
- Advanced GIS
- GIS Engineering
- Spatial Data Visualisation & Modeling
Surveying Specialism
- Advanced Surveying
- Satellite Positioning & Navigation
Both GIS and Surveying Specialisms

- GIS Engineering
- Spatial Data Visualisation & Modeling
Both GIS and Surveying Specialisms
- Location-based Computing and Services
- Urban Remote Sensing
Empolyment Prospects
The application of GIS in the community of Hong Kong has been increased very rapidly in the past ten years. For instance, many Hong kong governmental departments have introduced GIS to their daily work, compared with only two to three departments using GIS 10 years ago. These departments include, Lands Department, Planning Department, Highways Department, Transport Department, Fire Services Department, Civil Engineering and Development Department, Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department.
Local industry has also become very interested in GIS. Besides the traditional utility companies like gas and electricity, new industrial areas like telecommunication, planning, public administration, transportation, logistics, car navigation, civil engineering, archaeology and real estate have also started to adopt GIS for their business. GIS has widely extended its application area from traditional land surveying, mapping to much wider fields or application.
To take advantage of these ever widening opportunities, a MSc/PgD qualification from LSGI is your key to success.
Professional Recognition
The MSc programme has been accredited by The Hong Kong Institute of Surveyors (HKIS), the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), the Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors (ICES) and The Hong Kong Institution of Engineering Surveyors (HKIES).
Enterance Requirements
