What is GIS?

A geographic information system (GIS), is any system that captures, stores, analyzes, manages, and presents multiple types of data or datasets, that are linked to location. The system usually includes mapping software and can process the data for applications in many spatial disciplines such as cartography, remote sensing, land surveying, photogrammetry and geography.
Many types of spatial data can be integrated in a GIS

3-D models can be built for terrain surface and other geographical phenomena such as air pressure, temperature, pollution and noise
