MAPPING THE SURFACE TOPOGRAPHY OF THE MOON

Lunar Missions by China and Japan have obtained altimetric data

Altimeter Sensors on-board the Satellite produce height data for mapping the lunar surface by digital photogrammetry

Lunar Mapping with Chang’E-1

Images from the Chang’E-1 satellite have been used to create 3D models of the Moon’s surface using a technique called photogrammetry.

This technique is the same as is used to create the maps you use when you go hiking!

Photogrammetry can be used to create 3D data from any set of overlapping photos and is used in the development of 3D computer games and in many recent movies.
