The MSc programme in GIS has been running for more than 17 years. Being the longest running programme in its category, the programme is highly regarded by GIS and surveying professionals in Hong Kong and in Asia Pacific. By focusing on GIS and surveying technologies, students become familiar with the technical aspects of GIS operations and how GIS can be applied in a variety of industries as well as how results can be accurately interpreted. As such, graduates are employed in various disciplines.
The application of GIS in Hong Kong and many other countries has increased rapidly in the last two decades and beyond just land surveying. Ten years ago, only two or three government departments in Hong Kong used GIS. Today, the list has grown to include the Lands Department, Planning Department, Highways Department, Transport Department, Fire Services Department, Civil Engineering and Development Department, Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department.
In the private sector, utilities such as gas and power companies have been frequent users. In recent years, telecommunications, planning, public administration, transportation, logistics, car navigation, civil engineering, archaeology and real estate companies have also adopted GIS in their operations. As such, new career opportunities arise for graduates from these postgraduate programmes.

Providing fundamental knowledge and leading edge skills in GIS and surveying at postgraduate level, these programmes cater for two groups of students. Those coming from non-Geomatics background will get specialist education in GIS while those with Geomatics background will advance their knowledge in the field and get to learn the latest in technologies. The interaction between these two groups makes these programmes unique and enables students to integrate with people from different backgrounds, thus broadening their experience.
