  • Project Description

The MOOC have been officially launched on May 30, 2018 and it is FREE of charge. The 6-week online course consists of a combination of Geographic Information System (GIS), Remote Sensing (RS), Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), Location based System (LBS), Underground Utilities Survey and Smart City Application. By collecting the raw data to interpret the conditions, geo-spatial technologies help monitor and avoid the degraded environment. Sensing data tracks the path of routes. Information on the urban environment with the help of navigation and positioning system, leads to a well-planned city. All raw and processed data is consolidated as a database to formulate a Smart City.

The MOOC course materials were designed to allow for integration and use in existing subjects as support materials. Current course material includes: 49 textual pieces, 110 videos (including presentations by Distinguished Lecturers, in-house produced 26 animated videos, and 46 lecture presentations by lecturers), 2 infographics, and 118 questions designed to test learner's knowledge. All produced material can be used as-is should there be future releases of the course (on edX or on other online learning platforms), or can be used in parts by lecturers to support their existing on-campus subjects.

    •

Multiple social media channels were adopted for the promotion of the course to attract worldwide learners. Course-related articles and infographics, promotional videos, course updates and announcements were primarily made via Facebook channel. YouTube Channel hosts promotional videos for external use, internal promotion, and for ease of sharing.

  • Release in edX

edX is a platform for massive open online course (MOOC), which hosts territory-level course in a variety of disciplines. It is also available in English, Mandarin, French, Hindi, Spanish to suit the needs for worldwide students.

A feedback system was implemented to allow learners to comment on their experience of the course and contributions to future development of course material. Many open questions were provided to offer a chance for learners to deliver their ideas on edx platform. They were encouraged to make use of the discussion forums to reach out to other learners and course staff with issues of both technical and knowledge-related materials.

  • Key Statistics

Enrolment Number: 5229 (109 Verified Learners)
Countries Reached: 155 (Overall: US 12%, HK 9%, India 7%)

This course as an introductory course for the learners to explore the world of Geomatics.

MOOC course: Introduction to Urban Geo-Informatics

Dr. WONG Man-sing Charles, the Associate Professor from the Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics (LSGI), who aims to nurture future professionals in surveying and utilizing spatial information technology, computer knowledge and urban theoretical background, who leads the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) “Introduction to Urban Geo-Informatics” at edX.org. The 6-week online course consists of a combination of Geographic Information System (GIS), Remote Sensing (RS), Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), Location based System (LBS), Underground Utilities Survey and Smart City Application.
