Laboratory for Smart City and Spatial Big Data Analytics
Message from the Director
Welcome to the Website of the Laboratory for Smart City and Spatial Big Data Analytics!
The Lab aims to develop an area of excellence on Smart Cities with focuses on: (a) innovating and developing cutting-edge Smart City technologies, (b) transferring these technologies to industry, and (c) providing Smart City solutions to Hong Kong, the Greater Bay Area, and the World.
The ultimate goal of Smart City development is to improve people’s lives. This Lab has innovated and developed new technologies along this direction. These include, for example:
- Smart Environment: Technologies for air quality monitoring in the Greater Bay Area using long-term satellite images, light pollution monitoring and standards for Macao using 3D GIS and lighting models, and urban heat island studies using remote sensing and 3D GIS;
- Smart Mobility: Methods for people and goods mobility pattern analytics, technologies of integrating satellite positioning and multiple sensors technologies for seamless outdoor and indoor positioning and navigation;
- Smart Governance: 3D spatial data infrastructure for data interoperability between agencies;
- Smart Economy: Studies of the urban economy, such as housing prices;
- Smart Living: Studies on spatial distribution of overall patterns of the elderly and individual elderly in Hong Kong;
- Smart People: Proposing education programs in Smart City and urban informatics.
Hong Kong possesses unique features related to the study of Smart Cities. For instance, Hong Kong has the world's longest life expectancy for both females and males, is a very three dimensional and highly densified city, and is a global city where the East meets the West. Therefore, Hong Kong presents an interesting place to conduct Smart City research, and in response, the City deserves the best Smart City innovations and technologies.
Smart Cities is an interdisciplinary area which widely covers spatial big data analytics, spatial data infrastructure, IoT, cloud and edge computing, and artificial intelligence. Our Lab provides such an interdisciplinary research platform for fostering Smart City innovations, and I am looking forward to working together with you to achieve a higher quality life for people in smarter cities worldwide.
